So how do you travel in style?
Let’s be honest, when we’re heading on vacation and we’re on the way to the airport we normally opt for comfort over style. But you never know who you’re going to meet, what opportunities are going to arise. So in this feature you’ll discover how to travel in style.
When we travel, how do we do it in style?
From the luggage that we take to the clothes that we pack, how can we make sure that we’re always looking our best?
In this video and feature I highlight a few things to consider when travelling in style.
1. The Clothes You Wear
The first thing to consider is the clothes that you’re wearing. It sounds obvious, but normally when we’re travelling (especially long distances) we revert to comfort. We might be on a 9 hour flight and instead of wearing something stylish and smart, we opt for something that’s comfortable but too casual.
Again, you never know who you’re going to meet so you always want to try and look your best, balancing style with comfort. There’s not point wearing a super slim fit suit or something you’re not used to wearing, but at the same time you don’t want to revert to a tracksuit.
Personally I’ll wear a pair of well fitted jeans or chinos, then dress it up with a button-down shirt and then a jacket such as the Harrington or Sports jacket. It’s comfortable, but it’s stylish.
When it comes to shoes, they’re one of the most important things when it comes to travelling. Focus on making sure your shoes are comfortable but they make the right impression. I’ll tend to opt for a clean white sneaker or a leather dress shoe such as the Loafer or Double Monk.
2. Your Luggage
The second thing to consider is the luggage that you’re carrying your clothes in. I’ve seen a lot of guys dressed smartly, but then they’re carrying their girlfriends pink suitcases.
You want to make sure you’re focusing on the luggage that you’re travelling with. If you travel a lot, don’t be afraid to invest a bit more in the luggage that you use. But if you’re not, still concentrate on making sure the suitcases and bags are still stylish.
Focus on quality, a suitcase that you’ve dragged from airport to airport for the past 20 years is going to look battered and frankly unstylish. So invest in well made luggage and make sure the design and style is minimalistic.
3. The Transport
Then you need to think about the transport.
We recently took a family trip to Cornwall which is a 6 hour drive from where we live, and we took the Jaguar XJR Sport. Now the Jaguar made the trip easier and more exciting. The car’s cruise control made driving down the motorway easy, the leather and suede interior looked classy, the kids loved the entertainment system and usually driving a Manual, the fact it was an Automatic saved a lot of hassle.
The white exterior is stylish, and the size of the car itself was perfect for our luggage, the pram alongside all of the other travel essentials we took with us.
When travelling make sure you choose something reliable, if you choose a car that doesn’t get you to your location, standing on the side of the road waiting for someone to pick you up isn’t stylish. The same relates to when you fly, choose a reliable airline service that will get you on time and get you there in style.
4. The Company You’re With
The other thing is the company that you’re with, the people you’re spending time with. You want to make sure you’re spending time with people who make you laugh, people who make you happy, people you can learn from. If you travel with people you don’t get on with, it’s going to damage your overall experience.
5. Your Personal Belongings
Last but not least is what you’re doing whilst you’re travelling. I like to read, so I always take a book on a flight with me. Also I like to take a notepad with me to brainstorm or write down some ideas, alongside taking my laptop on with me to do some work or get into a creative space. When I fly on my own I always make sure I have a laptop, a notepad and a book because I get creative when I fly alone.
When you’re driving, you can’t do any of that. So make sure you’re listening to good Podcasts, good music to listen too, an audiobook, or maybe choose a more scenic route to enjoy the journey.
Don’t waste time when you’re travelling, utilise it well.
