We all have white trainers and whatever your personal style, they will always be a staple in your wardrobe. But let’s be honest, once they lose that pristine white look, it’s a bit downhill, especially with the British weather, you never quite know what the weather will do, unless it’s a heatwave summer, what the weather will do next. We’re not here to give you cleaning instructions, you can always get them online, but some useful tips that you go ahead and try.
Canvas or fabric trainers can be cleaned with a soft brush and a weak solution of washing up liquid but for more stubborn stains, if your trainer’s care label allows you to chuck them in the washing machine, you really can expect good results or part-good results if the stubborn marks haven’t gone, just remember to remove your shoe laces, get rid of any excess dirt and if you can put them in a mesh bag or pillow case to stop the noise of your trainers getting thrown around the machine. 30 degrees is good heat to start, and will help the shoes to not shrink or cause the edges to come away from the main body, and let them dry naturally in the warmth.
Leather needs more care as anything that is too harsh can cause cracking, but wiping the top with again a weak solution of washing-up liquid might just do the trick, and clean them more often than not. Don’t use laundry detergent. Some experts say that a few drops of WD-40 and wiping the shoes with clean cloth does wonders.
Getting the soles clean is much the same as above, but try a old toothbrush to get in between the cracks, and to leave them sparkling around the edges and trims try with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, or if you think you have a steady hand a Q tip dipped in bleach with help on the rubber outer parts to get rid of stubborn marks, wipe away with an old damp cloth after 5-10 minutes.
When possible always let your trainers air dry naturally, stuff some scrunched up newspapers inside and leave overnight. And if you trainers still have some scratch marks, spray them with Kiwi Sports Trainer Whitener, but keep reapplying this whitener every so often.
Failing our tips doesn’t work, go out and buy a new pair.
